Trending Now: East-West Rings

Have you ever asked yourself how you can make sure your engagement ring or wedding band stands out from the rest? Well, let me introduce you to the East-West ring.

What is an East-West Ring?

An East-West ring is almost exactly what it sounds like–a ring with components that are set from east to west. In other words, something is set sideways. Most commonly, the center stone is set sideways as opposed to straight up and down.

Not as commonly known as east-west are compass prongs. Generally, prongs are placed on the corners of each center stone. With compass prong rings, the prongs are set in the center of each side, similar to the arrows on a compass.

Many types of jewelry can be set this way: engagement rings, wedding bands, and even pendants.

East-West Engagement Rings

While the vast majority of engagement rings made at Lauren B are not east-west rings, every now and then we have a client who is willing to design an incredibly unique ring.

East-West Oval

A classic shape, ovals have become the most popular option for engagement rings for two years in a row. If you’ve fallen in love with an oval but don’t want to blend in with the sea of other oval rings, consider setting your oval sideways.

Fun fact: setting an oval this way can actually make your center stone look larger!

East-West Emerald

A symbol of elegance, the emerald cut diamond is a classic choice for those with a more refined and sophisticated taste. The emerald cut, also known as the hall of mirrors,  is not a brilliant cut, but a step-cut diamond. Very linear, it makes sense that this cut works just as well turned on its side.

With their elongated shape, emeralds are an optimal choice for east-west engagement rings as they have excellent finger coverage both right side up and sideways.

East-West Wedding Bands

Why leave all the fun to just engagement rings when wedding bands can be just as unique? Some of the trendiest wedding rings to date are in fact, east-west bands!

East-West Pear

A personal favorite to a few on the Lauren B team, east-west pear shape bands are a great alternative to the traditional wedding ring. The small pear-shaped diamonds set sideways are a unique detail to add to your ring stack or to stand alone.

Emerald wedding bands are a classic style that will fall off the bestseller list. Most popular are emerald eternity bands. However, emeralds can be set sideways to give the wearer more finger coverage and set themself apart from the rest.

East-West Oval

Oval eternity bands are another classic style that will always be trendy and chic. Due to their elongated shape, ovals are a great option as they can give the wearer a thinner band with just as much shine. Additionally, the wavy nature of an oval turned on its side emulates an alternating size round band!

Compass Prongs

Compared to regularly set prongs, compass prongs refer to prongs holding a center stone in place from the North, East, South, and West sides of the stone.
