The Botswana Effect: Could Namibia Ask More of its Deal with De Beers?
Recently, Botswana and De Beers ended their very lengthy negotiations with a new agreement that saw Botswana’s state-owned diamond trader receive 30% of Debswana’s output – a significant increase from the previous arrangement. Now, according to a report by IDEX Online, the government of Namibia “could seek an increased share in its sales agreement with De Beers.”
According to the current deal, Namdia, the state-owned diamond company, receives 15% of the diamonds produced by Namdeb, the 50/50 joint venture between the government and De Beers. The deal with Namibia, De Beers’ second biggest diamond-producing country after Botswana, expires in May 2026.
In April of this year, Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s mines and energy minister, commented to reporters: “Right now we are at 15 per cent, and therefore, when we review the agreement, we would also look at increasing the 15% to something else.”
