Guide to Building a Colorful Ring Stack

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but why limit your ring stack when you can make it colorful? Traditional options are stunning, but there’s so much more out there. And let’s face it, you don’t want to blend in, you want to stand out! Thankfully, there are so many ways to incorporate color into your ring stack.

Colorful Side Stones

One of the more unique ways to incorporate color into your ring stack is to start with color in your engagement ring. Design a three-stone ring with matching color gemstone or color diamond side stones.

There are several design options for a colorful three-stone engagement ring. Most popular, is choosing a color center stone, whether that is a color diamond or gemstone. However, since the center stone is the biggest part of the ring, choosing a color center stone is not for everyone.

The second option is to opt for a traditional center stone flanked by matching color diamond or gemstone side stones. Since side stones are smaller than the center stone, this option is best for those who are looking for a colorful accent.

You have a wealth of options here, but we recommend choosing stones that will hold up to everyday wear and tear. There are few things worse than realizing you need to replace a lost or damaged stone within just a few years.

What should you choose? Here are a few options:

  • Color Diamonds – Colored diamonds can be incredibly beautiful and they’re the hardest stones on earth, so you know they’ll hold up to your day-to-day routine.
  • Sapphires – Few stones can match the gorgeous blue of sapphires (or the stunning beauty of “fancy” sapphires, which can be green, purple, orange, pink, and yellow). Sapphires are very durable, making them an excellent budget alternative to color diamonds.
  • Rubies – Rubies come in at a 9 on the Mohs scale, next to Sapphires and just below diamonds, making them much more durable than other gemstones. Plus, you’ll find that rubies come in a range of hues, from pale pink to that deep red similar to garnets, allowing you to create a stunning ring that will stand the test of time.

Colorful Halo

Another option for those who want to add color, but desire something a bit subtler than color diamonds or gemstones is to add a color pave halo. This style option allows you to have a traditional center stone as your primary focus, but then stand out from the crowd with a colorful halo surrounding it.

Depending on what you choose for your halo, the color will stand out more or less. For instance, a pale pink halo might be just the touch you want, or you could go with something bolder— green or yellow diamonds might help you make just the statement you want!

Colorful Bands

Love the idea of color pave stones but not in love with a halo setting? You can opt for a color pavé band, instead. Chances are good that you’ve seen pave bands, a style in which tiny diamonds line the band of an engagement ring. Instead of using colorless or near-colorless diamonds, you can opt for color diamonds or sapphires!

The reason we don’t recommend emeralds or amethysts for pave is because of how soft they are; given the nature of a pave band, the stones are constantly in contact with other rings or fingers thus making them more susceptible to damage. Using stones that are not as sturdy, like emeralds and amethysts, would damage the gemstone and possibly the engagement ring.

Of course, the other option is to incorporate colorful diamonds or gemstones into your wedding band. Should you go this route, you can choose how prominent your color stones become.

Mixing Metals

Perhaps you want a more traditional ring but still crave a bit of color. There’s good news! You have several options here, and one of the most interesting is to mix metals in your band. This allows you to add a touch of color, so you stand out, but doesn’t go to the extreme of adding color gemstones or diamonds to the setting or band.

Not sure what we mean? Here are a couple of examples:

  1. Have a traditional yellow gold engagement ring? Add a white gold or platinum wedding band. It works in the opposite direction, too (a white gold/platinum engagement ring with a yellow gold wedding band). This creates contrasting colors that add interest and help your stack stand out from all the rest.
  2. Create a three-color stack! This is simpler to do than you might think, and it doesn’t have to mean wearing a combination of bands so thick that they’re uncomfortable. For instance, you could get two thin wedding bands – one in white gold and one in rose gold – and then combine those with a yellow gold engagement ring with one on each side. You can also mix and match your color options to get just the right combination for your sense of style.
