Diavik Diamond Production Plummets in Q3
Rio Tinto has reported a 37% drop in third-quarter production at its Diavik diamond mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories, IDEX Online reports.
This decline is attributed to the completion of an underground pipe and challenges in the open pit section of the mine, located 200 miles from the Arctic Circle.
During Q3, production totaled 757,000 carats, down from 970,000 in Q2 and 954,000 in Q1. In February, Rio Tinto revealed plans to invest $40 million in underground mining to extend Diavik’s operational life until early 2026.
