Mining Jackpot: Lucapa and Gem Diamonds Find Two Huge Gems
Lucapa has recovered a 195-carat Type IIa diamond from its Lulo alluvial mine in Angola – the fourth diamond over 100 carats found at Lulo this year and the 44th since Lucapa began commercial operations in January 2015.
According to IDEX Online, it is also the sixth largest diamond in the mine’s history, with the largest being a 404-carat Type IIa diamond recovered in February 2016.
In other mining news, Gem Diamonds announced the recovery of its sixth diamond over 100 carats this year from its Letseng mine. The latest find is a 212.49-carat Type II white diamond, discovered on May 28. This follows the recovery of 118.74-carat and 169.15-carat diamonds in April, and a 295-carat stone in January, the largest find of the year so far.
The UK-based miner has already surpassed its total number of +100-carat diamonds recovered in 2023 within the first five months of 2024.
