A Massive 391-Carat Diamond Discovered in Sierra Leone

A huge 391.45-carat Type II diamond has been discovered at the Meya mine in Sierra Leone, according to IDEX Online. This is the second-largest diamond ever found at this deposit.

Company executives expressed both satisfaction with the discovery and disappointment that the diamond was originally part of an even larger rough stone weighing 514.99 carats, which broke into three pieces during the mining process.

Jan Joubert, CEO of Meya Mining, stated, “Our priority now is to ensure that going forward we can recover these high-value stones intact.” He added that the company will work closely with their engineering and processing partners to upgrade the plant, eliminate breakages, and increase its capacity to recover exceptionally large diamonds.

In November 2017, Meya Mining recovered a 523.44-carat Type IIa diamond, which similarly broke into three pieces, with the largest piece weighing 476.98 carats.
