Birthstones for the Fall Season

Embrace the beauty of Autumn with jewelry that includes one of the fall birthstones. Each gemstone carries its own unique story, making it a perfect choice for an engagement ring, wedding band, or piece of fine jewelry. Incorporating a fall birthstone into your jewelry collection is a wonderful way to celebrate your birth month and, of course, embrace the beauty of these colorful gemstones.

September Birthstones

Sapphires are the birthstone of September. They’re known for their vibrant blue color and are often incorporated into fine jewelry pieces. However, sapphires can come in other hues, such as pink, yellow, or even white.

Sapphires are renowned not only for their beauty but also for their exceptional hardness. On the Mohs scale, which measures a mineral’s hardness, sapphires rank a 9, placing them just below diamonds which rank at 10. Since sapphires are so hard, they are highly resistant to scratching and chipping, making them an ideal choice for jewelry. If you’re looking into gemstone jewelry, sapphires make an exceptional choice.

October Birthstones

October has not one but two birthstones, opal and tourmaline. Both of these gemstones offer stunning beauty that would make an excellent addition to any jewelry collection.

Opals are known for their unique, shifting display of color, a phenomenon also known as “play-of-color.” Opal’s colors are on a wide spectrum, with the more common white opal, the rare black opal, and even “fire opals” that come in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Opal ranges anywhere between a 5 to a 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it more susceptible to scratching. Though opals aren’t as hard as diamonds or sapphires, they shouldn’t be overlooked. For jewelry pieces that experience less wear and tear, such as necklaces or earrings, opals can be a great choice.

Tourmaline is a gemstone that comes in a wide range of colors, making it a versatile choice for a piece of jewelry. From vibrant red and pinks to deep blues and bright greens, tourmaline offers an array of colors to suit your tastes. This gemstone is also known for its hardness and durability, ranging from a 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it better suited for everyday wear. It is important to note, however, that despite its durability, it is more sensitive to heat than other gemstones and you will want to avoid high temperatures or sudden changes in temperature to avoid cracking or fractures.

November Birthstones

November features two beautiful gemstones: topaz and citrine.

Though most commonly seen in blue, topaz comes in a variety of other colors. Typically, topaz is stable when it comes to its color, but prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight may cause fading. Topaz ranks an 8 on the Mohs scale but it has poor toughness, or its ability to resist breaking, chipping, and cracking. Similar to tourmaline, you’ll want to avoid high heat and sudden temperature changes as to avoid internal breaks.

Citrine is renowned for its yellow, brown and orange hues, aligning perfectly with the colors of the fall season. Natural citrine is rare but most of the citrine on the market comes from amethyst that’s been treated by heat, along with smoky quartz. It’s easily one of the most affordable gemstones, readily available in all sizes. Citrine comes in at a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it a suitable option for everyday wear and tear.
