Canada: De Beers’ Two Mines Closed for Good by Year’s End

De Beers‘ Victor and Snap Lake mines in Canada, which began their closure in 2019 and 2022, respectively, are reaching the end of their “active closure” processes, Rough & polished reports.

Most of the infrastructure at the Victor mine has already been removed, and all of the Snap Lake mine’s infrastructure will be removed by the end of this year. Both sites will be under long-term monitoring after they close.

Meanwhile, in Botswana, De Beers said it is considering “significant investment” in two of its flagship mines – Jwaneng and Orapa – contingent on ongoing negotiations with the Botswana government.

In recent weeks, De Beers’ and Botswana’s long-standing deal and ongoing negotiations has come under scrutiny after its President Mokgweetsi Masisi threatened to walk away from the deal unless he got more of the revenue.
