Alrosa Confirms Restoration of Mir to Begin This Year

Russian mining giant Alrosa is set to commence the restoration of the Mir mine in 2023, as confirmed by Aisen Nikolaev, the head of Yakutia, during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, Rough & Polished reports.

Nikolaev said: “We have been designing a new mine over the years, it is fully designed. The company is already allocating investment funds. We have received approval from the government of the country. Through the Supervisory Board, all decisions have been made, and this year we are starting this largest project.”

He added that Mir will begin to produce on an industrial scale in 2030-2031, and that the restoration project will ensure the existence of the city of Mirny and Alrosa “for another 50 years.”

The Mir mine suffered a catastrophic flooding accident in August 2017, which killed eight people. Before the accident, the mine had accounted for over 10% of the Alrosa’s group’s diamond production.
