Canadian Diamond Production Achieves Record High

In 2022, Canada‘s trio of diamond mines – Ekati, Diavik, and Gahcho Kue – reached an unprecedented production value of US $1.58 billion (CAN $2.17 billion), as reported by Canada’s Natural Resources Department (NRCan).

According to IDEX Online, this marks a substantial 28% surge for these Northwest Territories-based mines. However, surpassing this milestone seems unlikely, with Diavik, managed by Rio Tinto, scaling down operations in anticipation of its slated closure in 2026.

Caroline Cochrane, Premier of the Northwest Territories, told the Cabin Radio website: “It’s hard to point to any part of the mining sector immediately ready to take over, as diamonds decline.”
